Yvonne Mugiraneza is a passionate advocate living with psoriasis whose journey with the condition began in Rwanda at the age of eight. What initially appeared to her family as a simple insect bite gradually developed into worsening symptoms that left them confused and searching for answers. After moving to the United States, Yvonne was finally referred to a dermatologist and began treatment, though finding an effective solution took time. Eventually, a new dermatologist prescribed medication that successfully cleared her psoriasis, leading her to believe that chapter of her life had ended. However, in 2021, the condition returned unexpectedly, bringing back not only the physical symptoms but also the emotional distress, constant itching, and frustration she had largely forgotten since childhood. Rebuilding her treatment journey proved difficult, especially because language barriers and incomplete medical records made it hard to trace her previous care. After unsuccessful experiences with creams and oral medications, she finally found relief through injectable treatment.
Beyond the physical impact of psoriasis, Yvonne is deeply aware of the emotional and social challenges that often accompany the condition, particularly within African communities where awareness about psoriasis remains limited. She has reflected on how isolating it felt to grow up without seeing other Black or African individuals openly living with psoriasis. That sense of invisibility inspired her desire to become a voice for others facing similar struggles. Through online research and participation in psoriasis support groups on Facebook, Yvonne began connecting with people who understood her experiences, helping her realize the importance of representation, openness, and community. Supported by the love of her family, she remains determined to use her story to encourage others living with psoriatic disease, reduce stigma, and help people feel less alone in their journey.
