The International Federation of Psoriasis Associations (IFPA) welcomes the adoption of the new Political Declaration on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) and Mental Health, marking an important global commitment to improving prevention, care, and support for people living with noncommunicable diseases such as psoriatic disease.
Throughout the past year, IFPA has actively contributed to advocacy efforts supporting the development and adoption of this declaration. Working alongside members, partners and engaging its global network of patient organizations, IFPA has advocated for stronger recognition of the burden of NCDs, how they interlink and the importance of placing the real lived experience at the heart of policy making.
Noncommunicable diseases - including cardiovascular disease and diabetes - account for the majority of deaths and disability worldwide. Psoriatic disease is an NCD. For people living with psoriatic disease, existing challenges such as access to care are compounded by the insurgence of comorbidities and mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. The new Political Declaration acknowledges these interconnected challenges and calls on governments to take more coordinated and people-centered approaches to health.
“This declaration has the potential to make a positive impact on people’s lives,” said Frida Dunger, Executive Director of IFPA. “When countries take action on its commitments, it can lead to earlier diagnosis, better access to care, and more holistic support that addresses both physical and mental health. For people living with psoriatic disease, this can mean improved quality of life and better long-term health outcomes”.
The real impact of the declaration will depend on how it is implemented at national and local levels. IFPA believes that meaningful progress requires strong political leadership, sustained investment in health systems, and the active involvement of patient organizations. People living with psoriatic diseases bring essential perspectives that can help shape policies and services that respond to real-world needs.
As part of our ongoing work, IFPA has strengthened our approach to global advocacy by fostering closer coordination with its member organizations. This collaborative model ensures that global policy developments are informed by national experiences and that international commitments can be translated into tangible action on the ground.
Looking ahead, IFPA will support its member organizations in engaging with policymakers, raising awareness of the declaration, and advocating for its implementation within their countries. This includes the development of a dedicated advocacy toolkit to help guide national efforts and support consistent, effective messaging.
IFPA remains committed to working with governments, health institutions, and civil society partners to ensure that the promises made in this Political Declaration lead to tangible improvements for people living with psoriatic disease worldwide.
